“Ahhh, this calls for a spreadsheet…”

It took almost seven years to see “The Nerine Seven” finally published, and many thanks to Neil Hogan at Alien Dimensions for being the brave soul to buy it. I keep a spreadsheet of all my submissions and rejections, which I encourage for all fiction writers. Many, many rejections, many updates, but hope springs eternal.

Wayne HarrisAndromeda Spaceways Magazine8/18/18Ding, after second round review9/6/18Unfortunately, your story did not pass the second round of reading, so we  must reluctantly release your story.  An exciting concept as the Nerine 7 crew is divided into alternative  histories and have to fight for their own identities as they know them.     Good grasp of grammar, but the storyline/plot is the concern, with much unnecessary detail that didn’t add to the story’s authenticity, no clear story arc, and subplots that were unnecessary and unfulfilled.
Neil ClarkeClarkesworld magazine10/11/18Ding10/15/18Thank you for the opportunity to read “The Nerine Seven.” Unfortunately, your story isn’t quite what we’re looking for right now.  In the past, we’ve provided detailed feedback on our rejections, but I’m afraid that due to time considerations, we’re no longer able to offer that service. I appreciate your interest in Clarkesworld Magazine and hope that you’ll keep us in mind in the future.

In addition, much of the first nine or ten pages consists of dialogue explaining what is going on and why it’s important, and we prefer narratives that show us rather than tell us

We are going to pass on your submission, The Nerine Seven, although we do appreciate you considering us. Writing is very subjective and just because we didn’t select this piece doesn’t mean others won’t. It just wasn’t the right fit for us.  Thank you again for submitting your work to Deep Magic. You are always more than welcome to submit something else in the future so long as it meets our guidelines.

I’m so sorry. I have no idea how this happened but I didn’t reply when I was supposed to in September. I guess the rapid decline of my father had something to do with that, though I should have left a note to myself.
I had planned to write to say that I very much enjoyed your story and wished to ask whether you’d mind waiting an issue as it’s more suited to the Mars theme of issue #26, now due out in May.
If you’ve already sold it elsewhere, I completely understand. If it’s still available, then I’d like to offer US$20 for your story. I can send you a contract and details in the next email.
Congratulations on your other sales. That’s great to see as it means more people are developing an interest in our kinds of stories.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Neil
